Levinton has a long interest in macroevolution, and wrote Genetics, Paleontology, and Macroevolution. He also studies the ecology and evolution of marine and aquatic invertebrates and has authored the textbook Marine Biology: Function, Biodiversity, Ecology and co-edited The Hudson River Estuary.
