The Vicar of Wakefield

The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith is a novel published in 1766. It depicts the fall and rise of the Primrose family, presided over by the benevolent vicar, the narrator of a fairy-tale plot of impersonation and deception, the abduction of a beautiful heroine and the machinations of an aristocratic villain. By turns comic and sentimental, the novel depicts domestic life and loving family relationships.

About the author

Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) was an Irish novelist, poet, and playwright associated with the literary circles of eighteenth-century London. Best known for The Vicar of Wakefield, the poem The Deserted Village, and the play She Stoops to Conquer, Goldsmith combined humor, sentiment, and social observation in works that bridged Augustan and early Romantic sensibilities. His writings remain central to the study of eighteenth-century English literature.
