Across the globe, legitimate opposition is menaced by populists and autocrats. This book offers the first theory of legitimate opposition in fifty years. Marshalling normative arguments and a revisionist reconstruction of opposition's history, Kirshner's timely book demonstrates why even imperfect and unequal systems of legitimate opposition merit active defense.
