L'oeuvre poétique de Pavese est un objet tout à fait singulier. Elle est à la fois moderne et antimoderne, pastorale et citadine, froide et lyrique. Sans être assignable à un quelconque mouvement littéraire majeur, elle se situe à la croisée de tous : marquée aussi bien par la nostalgie du mythe, se faisant païenne par endroits, que par la tentative d'élaborer un style opposé au pathos de l'intériorité, qui tend à trouver sa forme dans un objectivisme sobre et faussement simple.
