La vie heureuse

S'il est une question qui parcourt comme un fil rouge toute l'oeuvre d'Augustin, c'est celle d bonheur, ou plutôt du désir de bonheur. Augustin ne cesse de revenir sur ce qui lui paraît comme le paradoxe central de la vie des hommes : le bonheur réside dans l'accomplissement du désir, or la vie toujours menacée de mort court à chaque instant le risque de sa perte. Hannah Arendt, dans son travail de jeunesse sur Le concept d'amour chez Augustin, avait bien montré que la recherche de la vie heureuse est au coeur de l'oeuvre d'Augustin et fonde jusqu'à sa conception du divin, car « pour pouvoir attendre de l'avenir la vie heureuse du désir, il faut déjà avoir fait l'expérience de cette vie avant même tout ce sur quoi peut porter le désir », il faut avoir la mémoire de l'origine du bonheur.
