Sur le front britannique, à partir du 9 juin, un nom de localité va reléguer dans l'ombre tous les autres et notamment celui de Caen, l'un des objectifs stratégiques du jour J. Un nom que l'Histoire retiendra bientôt comme l'un des épisodes les plus tragiques de toute la bataille de Normandie : Tilly-sur-Seulles.
Tilly-sur-Seulles, Lingèvres, Cristot, Boislonde, Saint-Pierre, Audrieu autant de noms qui symbolisent l'âpreté des combats qui, entre Caen et Bayeux, marquèrent les trois premières semaines suivant le débarquement. Tilly-sur-Seulles, bien que ne constituant pas un objectif pour les troupes alliées, au contraire de Villers-Bocage, va devenir la charnière de la bataille de Caen du 9 juin au 26 juin et sera l'un des premiers villages de Normandie détruits par les combats. Pris et repris 23 fois par les belligérants pendant près d'un mois, le village sera sinistré à près de 70% et perdra près du dixième de sa population. Des centaines de soldats moururent pour percer ou défendre le front de Tilly.

The fierce battle to capture the French village of Tilly-sur-Seulles was an exceptionally bloody episode in the story of the allied breakout from Normandy in the summer of 1944. Lying to the South of the city of Bayeux, Tilly was not a primary objective of the allied advance as was the village of Villers Bocage but it became the cornerstone of the battle for Caen from June 9th until June, 26th. The battles for the Tilly Front such as Lingèvres, Cristot, Audrieu, Saint-Pierre, Boislonde became sadly famous for the combatants and the inhabitants as well.
Tilly-sur-Seulles saw what was probably the worst of the bocage fighting following D-Day. The village was taken and lost 23 times and was one of the first to be destroyed during the battle for Normandy. The civilians paid a very high toll to their liberation as one out of ten of the inhabitants of the village lost their lives.

This work focuses on the infantry and tanks battles for and around the village south of Bayeux. The author, curator of the Museum of the battle of Tilly-sur-Seulles, has used eyewitness accounts from both the civilians and military sides to give a day after day and hour after hour portrayal of the battle and a fitting tribute to the civilians and the youth of Germany and Great Britain from either Durham, Essex, Dorset, Devon, Hampshire, Nottinghamshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Cheshire, Northumberland... who fought, and the many who died, during the bloody battle for Tilly-sur-Seulles.
