Excerpt from Alumni Cantabrigienses, Vol. 1: A Biographical List of All Known Students, Graduates and Holders of Office at the University of Cambridge, From the Earliest Times to 1900; Part II, From 1752 to 1900; Abbey-Challis

Those great handicaps represented by the ambiguity attaching to the holders of similar surnames, the absence of more than one Christian name and, above all, the numerous inaccuracies and lacunae described in the Preface to Part I, are now things of the past. Consequently it is far easier to assign with complete certainty not only intra-university careers, but also to attach events and happenings to post-academic lives without the constant use of expressions ranging in degree of certitude from one of these names through possibly and probably to doubtless One obvious result of this change in the nature of the material involved is that the proportion of entrants whose subsequent history cannot be traced has been reduced to the very low order of about four or five per cent.

Advantage has been taken of the stabilisation of surnames to substitute, in con formity with present-day practice, a strictly lexicographical sequence for the former grouping of all variants under one principal form. Furthermore, the use of double notation has, owing to the introduction in 1752 of the New Style, or Calendar, been completely eliminated from these volumes: this, in fact, was one of the reasons which determined the chronological division of the whole work, for, until comparatively recent times, the majority of ba. Degrees were conferred between January 1st and March 25th. Among other new features will be observed the following. The recording of First Classes gained in Tripos Examinations and awards of University prizes; Presidency of the Union is also noted, as are all Blues that had been fully recognised up to the end of the period, so that rowing, cricket, football (under both codes), and the sports are thus included. Details of marriage are, in general, provided up to~the year 1850. Service in the war of 1914 - 18, as described in the official University War List, is invariably given. In the case of living persons the latest known address is appended to each record, reliance being placed, apart from Who's Who, Crockford and other such works, upon the University Parliamentary Register or the separate College lists: the location of beneficed clergy is indicated by the insertion of a hyphen after the last ascertainable date of tenure for each particular incumbency, and such other professions as those of the law and medicine are, wherever possible, similarly treated.
