L'art de persuader

L'art de persuader est un art de penser à la mesure
de la faiblesse et de la grandeur de l'homme. Le latin
tardif pensare a donné deux mots au français
moderne : « peser » et « penser ». Penser, c'est mettre
méthodiquement en balance, en doute et à l'épreuve,
sur deux plateaux, avant d'évaluer et juger, les objets
de l'expérience entre eux, et avec soi-même.

L'art de persuader de Pascal, écrit en 1658, texte
héritier de L'art de conférer (1580) de Montaigne,
suppose une alliance de la raison et de l'intuition,
de la logique et des figures rhétoriques, qui rend
l'esprit capable de toucher juste, dans une saisie
synthétique de toutes les données hétérogènes et
contradictoires d'une situation et d'une réception
vivantes.
