Davies : Si seulement je pouvais
descendre à Sidcup ! J'attends que
la météo s'arrange. Il a mes papiers,
le gars à qui je les ai laissés, c'est tout
noir sur blanc, je peux tout prouver. [...]

Aston : Vous pourriez... être gardien ici, si ça vous dit...

Davies : Quoi ?

Aston : Vous pourriez... vous occuper de la maison,
si ça vous dit... vous savez, les escaliers, l'étage, l'entrée,
surveiller tout ça. Astiquer les sonnettes. [...]

Davies : Ma foi, je... j'ai encore jamais fait de
gardiennage, vous savez... j'entends... j'ai jamais... ce
que je veux dire... j'ai encore jamais été gardien.
« Le Gardien est drôle jusqu'à un certain point.
Une fois cette limite franchie, cela cesse d'être drôle
et c'est à cause de cette limite que j'ai écrit cette pièce. »
