Quand il fut nommé sous lieutenant, il quitta le régiment de réserve dont il faisait partie pour rejdindre le régiment d'active déjà reformé deux fois, ou il savait devoir être bien plus apposé, et en exprima sa satisfaction: Je suis si impressionnable que j'aurais pu avoir peur devant le danger; maintenant, comme j'aurai à donner l'exemple du courage à mes hommes, je sais que je resterai ferme jusqu'au bout, et c'est tout ce que je demande.
