Six personnages - le Père, la Mère et quatre
enfants - se présentent à un directeur de théâtre.
Abandonnés par l'auteur qui les a conçus, ils brûlent
de parachever leur existence, c'est-à-dire de parler
et de se justifier. Et c'est bientôt, devant la troupe
de comédiens, le surgissement chaotique
des passions, des secrets honteux, des certitudes
de chacun niées par chacun des autres...
Mais comment pourraient-ils ensuite accepter
d'être représentés, «joués» par des acteurs ?
Peut-on reconstruire avec des mots la vérité
des êtres ?
OEuvre la plus célèbre du grand dramaturge italien,
créée en 1921, cette pièce instruit le procès
du langage et de la convention théâtrale.
Sa virtuosité, sa force tragicomique, ainsi que
l'emboîtement vertigineux de l'illusion et de la vérité
en font l'un des chefs-d'oeuvre dramatiques

siècle.
