Lord Jim

Pour les Blancs de la côte et les commandants
de navires, il était Jim - rien d'autre.
Évidemment, il avait une identité plus complète,
mais il n'acceptait pas de l'entendre mentionner.
Son incognito - qui était aussi percé qu'un
tamis - ne visait pas à dissimuler une personne,
mais un fait. Lorsque celui-ci traversait le masque,
il quittait sans délai le port où il se trouvait
et partait pour un autre, généralement
plus loin vers l'Est.
Jim en appelait à la fois aux deux versants de l'âme
- celui qui regarde constamment la lumière
du jour et celui qui, telle la face cachée de la lune,
reste sournoisement tapi dans une obscurité
perpétuelle, avec parfois seulement une furtive
lueur brumeuse venant caresser ses bords.
Son attitude mystérieuse me fascinait, comme
s'il avait été un prototype de sa race, comme si
la vérité obscure qu'il recelait était assez grave
pour affecter la conception que l'humanité
se fait d'elle-même.
