Die Glyptothek, hailed by many as the "most beautiful museum in Munich", possesses outstanding works of Greek and Roman sculpture. Among them are the Apollo of Tenea, the Munich Kouros, the pediment sculptures of the Aphaia Temple on Aegina, the Rondanini Medusa, the Grave Relief of Mnesarete, the statue of Eirene, the Barberini Faun, the Drunken Old Woman and the Boy with a Goose. Of exceptional importance is also the large number of naturalistic Roman portraits. This lavishly illustrated volume offers for the first time a comprehensive survey of this unique collection, founded by King Ludwig I of Bavaria and opended in 1830.
