La Mouette

« Il faut représenter la vie non pas telle qu'elle est, mais telle qu'on la voit en rêve. » C'est ce que proclame un des personnages de La Mouette.
Et Tchékhov avoue que sa nouvelle pièce transgresse les lois du théâtre : « C'est une comédie : trois rôles de femmes, six rôles d'hommes, quatre actes, un paysage (vue sur un lac), beaucoup de conversations littéraires, peu d'action, cent kilos d'amour. »
Pourtant, quand on parle de l'oeuvre théâtrale de Tchékhov, on pense tout de suite à La Mouette. Et l'oiseau, ses ailes déployées, reste l'emblème du Théâtre d'Art de Moscou.
