Chef héréditaire des Sioux Oglala, Luther Standing Bear (1868-1939) fut l'un des premiers Indiens à témoigner d'une existence qui l'amena du tipi paternel au monde étrange et inquiétant des Blancs. Son récit nous conduit de son enfance et de son apprentissage de la vie indienne jusqu'au jour où, après avoir participé à la tournée européenne de Buffalo Bill, il devient chef de sa tribu. Document d'une indéniable valeur historique et ethnographique, ce livre est aussi un plaidoyer en faveur d'un peuple injustement méprisé et massacré, en même temps qu'une vision lucide et sans complaisance de la société des hommes blancs.
