Carnets rédigés sur près d'un demi-siècle, du jeune homme de 18 ans qui, en 1948, écrit son premier récit de voyage, rempli d'illusions, entre Genève et Copenhague, à l'écrivain reconnu qui, en 1992, sillonne les routes néozélandaises. Le lecteur visite également en sa compagnie l'Afrique du Nord de 1957-1958 lors d'une tournée de films-conférences et la campagne de Java en 1970 en locomotive.
