Das auf der Vollversammlung 1994 angenommene Ergebnis eines mehrjährigen Lehrgesprächs gilt (neben der Leuenberger Konkordie) als Basistext der Gemeinschaft Evangelischer Kirchen in Europa. Mit ihr haben die refor ma torischen Kirchen erstmals eine gemeinsame Besinnung über die Kirche und ihren Auftrag vorgelegt und ihr Verständnis von 'Einheit in versöhnter Verschiedenheit' grundlegend bestimmt. Ausgehend von Gottes Handeln in Christus als dem Grund der Kirche und deren Bestimmung als Zeugin des Heils wird über die konkrete Gestalt der Kirchen, ihre Ämter und die Aufträge der Christen in der Welt reflektiert. Das Dokument wurde Grundlage für zahlreiche ökumenische Gespräche. Für die Neuausgabe wurde die englische Übersetzung revidiert.
Along with the Leuenberg Agreement, this text, the fruit of a doctrinal conversation lasting several years, is a foundational statement of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe. Here for the first time the churches of the Reformation presented a common reflection on the Church and its mission and identified the foundations of their understanding of church fellowship. On the basis of God's action in Jesus Christ as the ground of the Church and its calling to witness to salvation, it considers the concrete shape of the churches, their ministries and offices and the vocation of Christians in the world. The document became the basis for many ecumenical dialogues with non-protestant churches. The English text has been revised for this new edition.
