À Paris, au café russe Tari-Bari, se trouve parmi les
habitués une figure à la fois souveraine et taciturne,
effrayante et affable : Semjon Golubtschik. Un soir,
au cours d'une conversation, deux clients parlent de
cet homme comme d'un assassin. Qu'a-t-il fait ?
Pourquoi ? Le narrateur, un habitué, devient le
témoin d'une histoire rocambolesque qui nous
emmène de Saint-Pétersbourg à Paris, car l'individu
en question ne se fait pas prier pour raconter ce que
fut sa vie au service de la police secrète du tsar.
Écrit en 1936 à Paris, trois ans avant la mort de
l'auteur, ce livre marque la fin d'un monde ancien
- magistralement dépeint dans La Marche de
Radetzky - et le début d'un monde nouveau qui naît
dans la douleur de la Première Guerre mondiale.
