Desmond, jeune retraité, consacre ses journées à lire
le Guardian ou à suivre son épouse dans des événements
mondains. Il n'entend plus très bien et s'isole

pense échapper à l'ennui.
Portrait bouleversant d'un homme qui vieillit, La
Vie en sourdine est un roman majeur. La facétie et
la légèreté de David Lodge sont intactes mais elles
ont pris une tonalité plus profonde, presque grave,
comme si la comédie révélait sa part secrète de mélancolie.
