Victor ou Les enfants au pouvoir

Pièce étonnante, chef-d'œuvre du théâtre surréaliste (d'ailleurs créé par Antonin Artaud, en 1928), Victor ou les enfants au pouvoir est en apparence une comédie bourgeoise : à l'occasion d'un anniversaire, celui d'un garçon de neuf ans, éclatent la folie des uns, l'adultère des autres ; la bonne couche avec le maître de maison. Mais Victor, l'enfant, a la taille et l'esprit d'un adulte ; avec une petite amie de cinq ans, il s'emploie à dénoncer les apparences, à révéler toutes les laideurs et tous les secrets, avec une terrible cruauté. Le langage lui-même s'emballe : tantôt vers le délire surréaliste, tantôt en créant des mots nouveaux, ou des images poétiques. Vingt ans avant Ionesco, c'est déjà le théâtre de l'absurde, ou celui de la cruauté cher à Artaud. Sous le rire, que suscitent les moyens les plus divers et les plus grossiers, cet enfant de Jarry laisse un goût de cendre.
