La Divine Consolation et De l'Homme noble, aussi
connus sous le titre de Benedictus Deus, sont les
derniers traités de Maître Eckhart (1260-1328),
prestigieuse figure mystique de l'Occident chrétien,
qui a subi en son temps l'opprobre d'un procès en
hérésie, parce qu'«il a voulu en savoir plus qu'il ne
convenait».
Dédié à une reine en deuil, ce discours consolateur est
l'héritier d'une tradition philosophique qui a eu ses
représentants les plus renommés parmi les stoïciens.
Cependant, Maître Eckhart a sans doute été influencé
également par Dante, son contemporain, et par le
consolamentum des «bons hommes» cathares. Toute
cette richesse est cachée dans ce noble petit livre qui
faillit disparaître à jamais, après qu'un exemplaire fut
tombé entre les mains de l'Inquisition.
