CHARLES BAUDELAIRE

«Je veux montrer comment Baudelaire est enchâssé rigoureusement dans le XIX^e siècle», écrit Walter Benjamin à Gershom Scholem. Dans cette lecture très novatrice, qui se situe aussi bien à l'écart de la critique littéraire que d'une analyse sociologique, il ne s'agit pas de décrypter dans les thèmes baudelairiens les bouleversements économiques et sociaux mais, par un effet de miroir, d'éclairer les uns par les autres.
Le développement d'une société industrielle de masse, l'avènement d'un prolétariat, l'expérience de la foule dans la grande ville, celle du choc, la marchandise, la «perte d'auréole» du poète : autant de situations exemplaires à partir desquelles Baudelaire - le premier à avoir appréhendé la force productive de l'homme réifié -, ici rapproché de Blanqui et de Nietzsche, invente, selon Benjamin, un héroïsme moderne.
