Eighteen different directors and a slew of indie actors come together for PARIS, JE T`AIME, a cinematic homage to the City of Light. Each director presents his or her own short story set in a different Parisian quarter, each one featuring a different cast of characters. The pieces vary in length, with some of them striving to tell a fully developed tale--no matter how simple the plot--while others are more abstract, content to rely on sparse dialogue and vivid imagery. With directors such as Gus Van Sant, Alexander Payne, Wes Craven, and the Coen brothers participating, the tales are as varied and oddball as one might expect. Maggie Gyllenhaal plays a lonely actress with a fondness for her hash dealer. Elijah Wood encounters a seductive vampire on a moonlit street. Steve Buscemi is a flustered tourist. Natalie Portman falls for a deaf Frenchmen. Each tale is markedly unique, and specific to the quirky style of its director, and the film is a veritable Who`s Who for indie buffs. In the moments when it succeeds, the movie can feel mysterious and magical, evoking the romance and longing the city is famous for.

Made by a team of contributors as cosmopolitan as the city itself, this portrait of the city is as diverse as its creators' backgrounds and nationalities. With each director telling the story of an unusual encounter in one of the city's neighborhoods, the vignettes go beyond the 'postcard' view of Paris to portray aspects of the city rarely seen on the big screen. Racial tensions stand next to paranoid visions of the city seen from the perspective of an American tourist. A young foreign worker moves from her own domestic situation into her employer's bourgeois environs. An American starlet finds escape as she is shooting a movie. A man is torn between his wife and his lover. A young man working in a print shop sees and desires another young man. A father grapples with his complex relationship with his daughter. A couple tries to add spice to their sex life.

    die teils eigenwillig den romantischen Kontext von Paris im Fünfminutentakt szenisch festhalten, sorgen für kurzweilige Unterhaltung oder auch Nachdenklichkeit. Natürlich merkt man qualitative Unterschiede in Idee und Umsetzung der einzelnen Episoden, und einige sind wirklich grottig, andere sosolala, aber einige sind schon richtige Kleinode. Letztlich muss jeder selbst entdecken welchen Kurzgeschichten er etwas abgewinnen kann.
    Mich persönlich hat Ana, die Geschichte des Kindernädchens, das wegen des Geldes auf das Kind reicher Elten aufpassen muss, ihr Kind aber morgens in den Hort bringen muss und dadurch keine Zeit für das Eigene hat, beeinduckt.
    Besonders hervorzuheben sind auch die Episoden der Coen-Brüder, Vincenzo Natali und Tom Tykwer, aber auch andere.
    Ist ja keine Sache, so einen kleinen Kurzfilm zu realisieren, könnte man meinen. Aber weit gefehlt: es gestaltet sich wahrscheinlich äusserst schwierig, eine essenzielle Geschichte in so einen kleine Augenblick zu packen.

    sehr spezieller film. mir hat er nicht schlecht gefallen, meine frau hingegen sagte "so ein sch.... film!! es sind tonnenweise kurzgeschichten, zum grossen teil ohne pointe, jedoch kann man die auch erahnen, was das ganze einen tiefgründigen sinn gibt. fazit: nicht schlecht aber aus den socken hat es mir nicht gehauen (ich was barfuss :-))

    won ech dä föum im kino gse ha, han ech mech scho gly gfrogt: wie hört denn dä uf? oder besser gseit, was esch die letschti szene? wo denn die tatsächlech cho esch hani müesse säge: brilliant!!! so öppis loschtigs hani scho lang nömme im kino gse. ond met de rechtige begleitig cha me ou träne lache...ou etz no. (je suis une femme très vivante.)

    witzige, traurige, schräge geschichten von 21 regisseuren à je 5 minuten. my favorites sind die von den coen-brothers, vincenzo natali und walter salles. Eigentlich hat mir nur der beitrag von gus van sant nicht gefallen, ansonsten ist das ein wunderbares sammelsurium an guten kurzfilmen.
