Water is one of the crucial resources in the world with only 3% availability as freshwater, nourishing around eight billion of worlds population. Considering the useable fresh water resources, around 2.5% is locked in the form of glaciers, polar ice caps, atmosphere, and soil. The remaining fresh water (0.5%) is used unsustainably over years ending up in highly polluted resources. The global statistics shows around four billion people in world are exposed to severe water scarcity, and the situation will be worsen by 2030. The solution lies in the proposition of water resilience through governance.
The new book, Water Governance: Nurturing Resilience for Sustainable Development, explores the use of water governance as a way to achieve sustainable development in a highly resource exploited era. It consolidates the existing knowledge and understanding of management and governance in the context of resilience in water sector. The volume looks at water scarcity and the need for governance from all sides-from theory to practice. It considers water resources in conjunction with changing climate implications, economic ramifications and issues, the political context of water resources, and much more.
The integrated research from various disciplines provides a comprehensive overview of the field as well as advances in water governance, offering new insights and perspectives. It highlights how the theory and research can be taken together to provide practical implications, influencing governance across different sectors in both water management practices and policies. The book also emphasizes on the importance of an interdisciplinary approach, recognizing that water resilience is a complex issue that requires insights from multiple disciplines.
Looking beyond the current state of knowledge, this volume explores frontiers in the field of water resilience by identify areas where further research is needed, contributing to the ongoing development in this field. The book is intended for a diverse audience, including academics, resource managers, international organizations, policymakers, and citizens.
