El Domingo de Pascua de 1908 una piadosa mujer de Matanzas, María Vera, es sanada de su invalidez por intercesión de la Virgen de la Medalla Milagrosa. A partir de entonces sus visiones y profecías despiertan la atracción o el violento rechazo de miembros del clero, religiosos y laicos de esa ciudad y el resto del país. El sacerdote español Manuel Martínez Pérez consagrará su existencia a promover sus revelaciones y reclamos, aunque la hostilidad o la indiferencia de la jerarquía eclesiástica contribuyen a su soledad y sus crisis de locura. La sucesión de etapas de violencia y confusión vividas por Cuba durante el gobierno de Gerardo Machado, los ecos de la Guerra Civil en España, los años cruentos tras el golpe de estado de Fulgencio Batista en 1952 y la etapa convulsa que se inicia en 1959 parecen confirmar las revelaciones apocalípticas de María, especialmente en 1962 cuando el mundo parece al borde de una guerra nuclear.

On Easter Sunday 1908, a pious woman from Matanzas, María Vera, was healed of her disability through the intercession of the Virgin of the Miraculous Medal. From then on his visions and prophecies arouse the attraction or violent rejection of members of the clergy, religious and lay people of that city and the rest of the country. The Spanish priest Manuel Martínez Pérez will dedicate his existence to promoting his revelations and claims, although the hostility or indifference of the ecclesiastical hierarchy contributes to his loneliness and his crises of madness. Roberto Méndez Martínez (Camagüey, Cuba, 1958). Poeta, ensayista y narrador. Licenciado en Sociología en la Universidad de La Habana. Doctor en Ciencias sobre Arte del Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana. Miembro de Número de la Academia Cubana de la Lengua y Correspondiente de la Real Academia Española. Consultor del Pontificio Consejo para la Cultura de la Santa Sede (Vaticano) por dos períodos (2008-2019). En la actualidad es Profesor Estable, titular de la Cátedra de Historia y Cultura de Cuba y Jefe del Departamento de Historia y Cultura del Instituto de Estudios Eclesiásticos Padre Félix Varela.Roberto Mendez Martinez (Camagüey, Cuba, 1958). Poet, essayist and narrator. Graduated in Sociology at the University of Havana. Doctor of Science on Art from the Higher Institute of Art in Havana. Number Member of the Cuban Academy of Language and Corresponding Member of the Royal Spanish Academy. Consultant of the Pontifical Council for Culture of the Holy See (Vatican) for two periods (2008-2019). He is currently a Permanent Professor, holder of the Chair of History and Culture of Cuba and Head of the Department of History and Culture of the Institute of Ecclesiastical Studies "Padre Félix Varela".
