Excerpt from North American Fauna, Vol. 1: No; 1, (Actual Date of Publication, October 25, 1849), Revision of the North American Pocket Mice
Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith the first of series of faunal papers to be published, under your direction, in the form of a serial entitled North American Fauna. T he present communication consists of a revision of the North American Pocket Mice (including descriptions of twelve new species and three new subspecies), and is based largely upon material collected in Dakota, Nebraska, Utah, and Arizona by Mr. Vernon Bailey, an energetic and enthusiastic naturalist now employed as a field agent of the Division.
