Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Sir David Lyndsay of the Mount, Lion King at Arms, Under James V, Vol. 2 of 3: A New Edition, Corrected and Enlarged, With a Life of the Author, Prefatory Dissertations; And an Appropriate Glossary
Pardoners were well known characters, at the epoch of the Reformation, who retailed the pope's indulgences, for profit, in every Christian country. Chaucer exposed them to ridicule in England. Luther raised the indignation of Germany against them; and Lyndsay now tried to make the pardoner con temptible in Scotland. The impositions of the pardoners, on the credulity of the people, were checked by several c'ouncils. See Du Cange in v. Qucstian'i, and Quastz'onarius. By the stat. 22 Henry VIII. C. 12. All Procters, and Pardoners, going about in any country, without suficient authority, are to be treated as vagabonds.
