Ma. Tbomjorz was born at Ednam, in the {hire of Roxa'urgé, on the 1 1th of Septeméer, in the year 1700. His father, minifier of that place, was but ltttle known beyond the narrow circle of his cc-pref byters, and to a few gentlemen in the neighbourhood; but highly refpeéted by them, for his piety, and his diligence in the paltoral duty as appeared afterwards in their kind offices to his widow and orphan family.
