Quando l'arte de' vetri fu scoperta, natural cosa era si faces sero tentativi per ridurre il vetro a vero specchio. Nel secolo X un inglese per nome Bedcham compose un trattato sull' ottica, nel qua le parla della luce ri¿essa dai vetri da una parte impiombati; ma della invenzione dei veri specchi moderni bisogna saperne grado al l'italia. Verso la fine del secolo XV in Murano ftt composto il primo specchio di vetro col mercurio, metallo che tre qualità a que sto scopo si trova avere bianchezza, ¿uidità, attitudine ad essere combinato con altri metalli. Evviva dunque il mercurio, a cui siam debitori di vedere la nostra faccia nella sua vera forma, nel suo proprio colore.
