The 200 evergreens in this box consist entirely of film music hits from three decades, and are sure to reawaken many memories and emotions. From the very inception of the talkies music and singing were frequently an integral part of films, but at first it was the films that created the hits out of their specifically composed numbers and not viceversa. This too was the case with the musical film Die Drei von der Tankstelle (“The three down at the filling station”), actually described as an “operetta”, with Lilian Harvey and Willy Fritsch playing the leading roles, both of whom are represented on these 10 CDs as are dozens of other famous stars who profited by the interplay of records and cinema.
As the media were still in their infancy in the first half of the twentieth century it was possible to influence the public through the cinema and jolly along the dampened wartime mood a little. The heyday of films that featured hit songs and their singers in a loosely structured storyline came in the 1950s as they gradually ousted the revue film. Little store was set by the inclusion of meaningful connections between the songs and the action, as had been characteristic in film versions of operettas and musicals – the main thing was to satisfy the longing of many Germans for the South and the sun, for example with René Carol’s Südliche Nächte (“Southern nights”), Teddy Reno’s Unter Palmen am blauen Meer (“Beneath the palm-trees beside the blue sea”), Lolita Seemann (“Sailor”), Freddy Quinn’s Unter fremden Sternen (“In faraway places”) or, in a duet with Caterina Valente, Peter Alexander’s Komm ein bißchen mit nach Italien (“Let’s spend a while in Italy”). The last-named did successful business with films such as Liebe,Tanz und 1000 Schlager (“Love, dancing and a 1000 hits”), Bonjour Kathrin, Und abends in die Scala (“Then evening at La Scala”), Liebe,Jazz und Übermut (“Love, jazz and high spirits”) and Peter schießt den Vogel ab (“Peter really takes the biscuit”). Of special significance at that time was the advent of the longplaying record, which gave a huge boost to the spread of popular music hits.
Almost everyone knows the names of the artists and their hits on these 10CDs: Vico Torriani, Bibi Johns, Chris Howland, Heidi Brühl and many others evoke sweet memories and engender a pleasant atmosphere.
