Oral Reading: The Silent Debate

This work investigates the relationship between the practiceof reading out-loud and the teaching and learning of reading in theprimary school. It argues that oral reading is a different practicefrom reading silently and that it contributes to the constructionof a school reader in particular terms. Specifically it contributesto the ways students understand reading and what it is to become areader in school. It adopts a sociocultural view of reading. Manypast studies of oral reading used psychological approaches thatignored the historical, social, communicative and interactivecontexts of oral reading practices. This work investigates oralreading practices from the perspectives of students, teachers andthe researcher. It describes oral reading practices in terms of thepedagogies they maintain, the activities they build and theidentities they construct.
