Les bas-fonds

Pepel est un cambrioleur vivant dans une pension des bas-fonds tenue par le receleur Kostyliov et son épouse Vassilissa, dont il est l'amant. Il est aimé secrètement par Natacha, la soeur de Vassilissa. Celle-ci est promise par Kostyliov au commissaire de police si celui-ci ferme les yeux sur ses trafics. Autour d'eux évolue un groupe hétéroclite de laissés-pour-compte luttant pour survivre.
