Is the prison sentence limited to the person of the offender? is the question that will be answered in the course of this research. Those deprived of their liberty must comply with the sanctions and punishments established by law in Ecuador "in order to achieve the rehabilitation" of the people who enter the penitentiary centres. However, there are no rights that protect the relatives of the inmates, no norm or public policy contributes to mitigate the fact of having a family member imprisoned, their relatives are treated by the State with the same or worse cruelty than the prisoner, these relatives of the PPL have not committed any crime! The case of the relatives of persons deprived of their liberty in the city of Ibarra-Ecuador is studied.
