Women's Rights, or the lack thereof, is a multidimensional, worldwide phenomenon. Crucially, it often intersects with another violation of human rights: that of violence. Such breaches of human rights can leave victims suffering the fall out for years.
This book engages with key questions about both gender discrimination and violence, aimed particularly at women, with the aim of providing a practical source that can be drawn on by lawyers, legal practitioners, and policy makers, but that will also be accessible to interested readers. Taking as its starting point the core issue of human rights within the European Union, the author explores the legislative and practical efforts that have been made to promote gender equality and combat gender-based violence, and she explores how these laws have impacted legislation in a Candidate Country, her own native homeland of Turkey. The volume analyses progress and challenges within both the EU and Turkey, assessing landmark and recent case laws and highlighting examples of good and bad practices to explore similar but often distinctive efforts and approaches to preventing gender-based discrimination.

About the author










Sükran Ünal is a lawyer with vast experience in various
fields of law. Upon graduation from Atilim University
Faculty of Law, she fulfilled the traineeship of the Bar Association in Turkey and became eligible to perform
as an attorney-at-law.

She gained hands-on experience in leading law firms. Starting from the year 2014, she started to perform as a
judge; first as a trainee and then as a competent judge at Hozat Court House and the Cassation Court of Turkey.

In 2021, she resigned from the judiciary and started running her own proprietorship in
Belgium; SRT Legal Consultancy. Through SRT Legal Consultancy, she now provides a wide range of legal consultancy services to individuals, private companies, law firms and international organisations. At the same time, she contributes to seminars and workshops as a speaker or voluntary mentor, both on national and international platforms.

Apart from her professional activities, she is passionate about human rights and has published articles on several topics in the field. This book is also a result of this passion, as well as the rich, thorough study at Ghent University.
