Summary

Franz Lenk (1898–1968) was one of the most well-known painters of Neue Sachlichkeit. The publication offers a current perspective on his oeuvre and artistic career. It poses questions not only about his artistic role models, but also about his worldview and how it is manifested in his painting. For instance, Lenk’s ambivalent position during the years from 1933 to 1945 is analyzed and assessed within the context of the events of the time. Biographical and art-historical insights, including about the group "Die Sieben" (The Seven) and his participation in the exhibitions of the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh in the 1930s, are incorporated into the presentation. The exhibition and catalogue present numerous works from twenty-four private and public collections in Germany and Switzerland.
