About the author
Karunäs life has been intertwined with the Keys since 2002, when she first showed up to make a documentary about the search for a sunken slave ship off the coast of Key Largo. She eventually moved to the Keys and lived there for eight years; first living and working on a marine treasure hunting boat, before meeting co-author and now husband Steve Alberts, who owned a thriving marine canvas and upholstery business based in the Lower Keys.
Both became deeply intertwined with many facets of the community and natural world. They filled their time camping on their skiff, finding hidden sandbars, exploring back alleyways, meeting personalities at dive bars, and even searching out the stories of abandoned Cuban refugee boats. Wanting to help visitors find their own novel Keys experiences, they set to work researching and writing the guide.
They moved away in 2020, due to Covid, (see Karunäs award-winning essay about it in the Florida Rambler). They return regularly to visit, including a trip in Winter 2021 when they worked as caretakers for the National Wildlife Refuges at Ballast Key. Karuna is a full-time freelance journalist and nature writer, with credits including National Geographic Channel, National Parks magazine, and many Florida-centric outlets. While Steve spends most of his creative energy building useful things, he is also a professional writer and photographer, with credits in Keys Weekly, Review, and National Parks magazine.
