Sodium is used in concentrating solar power systems due to its excellent heat transfer properties and large operating temperature range. In a systematic evaluation of a range of thermal energy storage systems a packed-bed thermocline storage with filler material has been identified as a promising storage configuration. Numerical investigations demonstrate that such a storage system can be successfully charged and discharged with sodium.
