This work analyzes climate change adaptation strategies and their determinants in the case of smallholder farmers Kedida Gamela district. Descriptive statistics was employed to analyze smallholder's perceptions of climate change and adaptation strategies, while multinomial logit model was used to identify the determinants of adaptation strategies to climate change. Over the past 30 years respondents have perceived increase in temperature and decrease in precipitation, increase in drought and change in land cover. As a response, the result shows that 100 percent of the respondents have been practicing various adaptation strategies to climate change such as crop based, livestock based and policy driven. The results from the multinomial logit analysis showed that a number of factors determine the choice of smallholders to adapt to climate change via autonomous and externally supported adaptation strategies in the area. However, the impact of the various factors varies among the three major climate change adaptation strategies identified in the area. Future policy making processes should pay due attention to incorporate action plans that strengthen the autonomous adaptation strategies.
