Pompei altro non fu che una piccola città di trenta mila circa, press' a poco ciò che era Ginevra or fa tren t'anni. Al paro di Ginevra meravigliosamente sita nel fondo d'una pittoresca vallata, fra montagne che coprono da un lato l'orizzonte, a pochi passi dal mare e d'un torrentello, ch'era fiume una volta, e che in esso si perde. Pompei, dico, invitava a delizioso soggiorno personaggi di gran levatura, ma sovratutto era un formicolaio di commercianti pasta d' uo mini tranquilli, agiati, prudenti e probabilmente onesti.
