La géométrie analytique, créée par descartes dans un ouvrage paru en 1637, repose sur l'emploi de méthodes qui permettent de donner une forme alge brique aux problèmes de géométrie. Ces méthodes consistent à faire correspondre à chaque point du plan un système de deux nombres, appelés coordon nées du point; une équation entre ces coordonnées représente une courbe; les points communs à deux courbes s'obtiennent en résolvant leurs équations.
