La paléontologie est la connaissance des êtres organisés anciens. Elle se divise naturellement en deux branches la paleozoologie, qui traite des animaux, et la paléophytologie, des restes de végétaux. Pour la commodité du langage on emploie, d'une manière générale, le mot fossile, soit adjectivement, soit substantivement, pour désigner tous les restes organiques ou seulement leurs traces reconnaissables que l'on rencontre dans les couches de la terre.
