Zum ersten Mal werden Polen und Rußland in ihren nationenspezifischen Beziehungen über tausend Jahre hinweg untersucht, in ihrem Wesen und Handeln innerhalb dereuropäischen Geschichte dargestellt. Dabei ergeben sich tiefe Einblicke in die Auseinandersetzung zwischen dem republikanischen und dem autokratischen Staatsprinzip. In der deutschen Historiographie haben die Beziehungen zwischen Polen und Rußland als eines der großen Problemfelder der europäischen Geschichte bisher wenig Beachtung gefunden. Das Verhältnis zwischen den beiden Nachbarn im Osten interessierte offensichtlich nur particulariter, nämlich im Blick auf die Geschichte von Preußens Aufstieg zur Großmacht im Zusammengehen mit Rußland. Bis heute sind kaum Zweifel aufgekommen an der Unvermeidbarkeit und Schlüssigkeit von Preußens Einbindung in Rußlands osteuropäisches Hegemonialsystem und damit in RußlandsSteuerung der "polnischen Frage".

This volume is unique in that it represents the first German investigation and analysis of the relations between Poland and Russia during a period of one thousand years, their national identities, and their policies and actions within the context of European history. Deep insight is provided into the conflict between republican and autocratic principles of state. Although the relations between these two nations gave rise to one of the most serious problem areas in European history, apparently this subject had been of interest to German historiographers only in its relevance to Prussia's advancement - in a symbiotic relationship with Russia - to the status of a big power. There has never been any doubt on the inevitability and logic of Prussia's integration into Russia's hegenomical system in Eastern Europe and into Russia's management of the "Polish question".
