Interest and self-interest are concepts that have attracted multiple interdisciplinary approaches in the last decades. In this monograph, the author examines anew all nomenclature of these concepts in ancient Greek, and recapitulates relevant previous debates. This survey enables him to deal with major issues related to the Greek citizen and the polis as a whole: the gnoseology of self-interest, the manipulation of conflicting interests, the balance between expediency and justice, the vigour of competitive spirit among the Greeks and the conciliation of private with common good. The symphéron cannot be perceived beyond the context and framework of the much-discussed topics of individualism and utilitarian trends in ancient Greek thought and civic 'ideology.' Exploring these aspects of his subject-matter, the author provides a number of clues as to how one may better comprehend the polis' stratagems to 'invent' those devices needed to aggregate the one into the many.
Interesse und Eigennutz sind Begriffe, denen in den letzten Jahrzehnten mannigfaltige interdisziplinäre Forschungsansätze gewidmet wurden. In dieser Monographie untersucht der Autor erneut die gesamte Terminologie dieser Begriffe im Altgriechischen und fasst einschlägige vorangehende Debatten zusammen. Diese Übersicht ermöglicht ihm, wichtige Themen in Bezug auf den griechischen Bürger und auf die Polis als Ganzes zu behandeln: Die Erkenntnis des Eigennutzes, der Umgang mit widerstreitenden Interessen, die Balance zwischen Nützlichkeit und Gerechtigkeit, die Kraft des agonalen Geistes unter den Griechen und der Ausgleich des privaten und des Gemeinwohls. Das symphéron kann nicht erkannt werden jenseits des Kontexts und Rahmens der oft diskutierten Themen des Individualismus und der utilitaristischen Tendenzen im Denken und in der Polis-,Ideologie' des antiken Griechenland. Indem er diese Aspekte seines Gegenstandes untersucht, bietet der Autor einige Anhaltspunkte dafür, wie man die ,Listen' der Polis besser verstehen kann, mit denen sie jene ,Kniffe' ,erfindet', die notwendig sind, um den Einzelnen in die vielen zu integrieren.
