Le 4 juillet 1862, lors d'une promenade en barque sur le fleuve Isis, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, assistant de faculté au Church College d'Oxford, improvise pour les trois filles de son doyen le fantasque récit des aventures d'une petite fille tombée au centre de la terre. L'une d'elles, Alice, lui demande d'en faire en livre. Il s'exécute et offre à la fillette en cadeau de Noël un carnet soigneusement manuscrit et illustré. Augmenté et désormais signé par un certain Lewis Carroll, ce texte est publié en 1865. Les illustrations de Charles Dodgson, alors jugées inadéquates, ont laissé la place à celles d'un dessinateur réputé de l'époque Sir John Tenniel. Alice au pays des Merveilles est née. Aujourd'hui, c'est le contenu du précieux carnet que nous restituons dans sa graphie et ses images originelles. Plus qu'une Alice nouvelle, une Alice retrouvée.
July 4th 1862, on board of a boat descending the river Isis, the deacon Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, assistant at the Oxford Church College, starts to improvise in front of his dean's 3 daughters the fantastic tale of a little girl who fell to the centre of the earth. One of the girls, Alice, asked him to write The book. He does so and for Christmas presents the young lady with the delicately handwritten and illustrated book. Increased by and from now on signed by a certain Lewis Carroll, this text is published in 1865. Alice in Wonderland sees the day. Those of a wellknown illustrator, John Tenniel, replaced the original pictures, judged inadequate. It is the contents of that precious book that we release today, in their original handwriting with the initial pictures. More than a new Alice, an Alice to be rediscovered.
