Cet ouvrage, édité en l'honneur de Claude Vial, professeur émérite d'histoire
grecque à l'Université Paul Valéry-Montpellier III, rassemble 12 contributions
inédites et 4 articles de Claude Vial elle-même, republiés pour l'occasion. Claude
Vial, en tant qu'historienne, témoigne d'une fine connaissance des inscriptions et de
la littérature grecque ; elle est bien connue pour ses travaux sur Délos, sur la société
grecque, notamment sur l'histoire des femmes. On ne s'étonnera donc pas que ces
Mélanges qui lui sont offerts comportent des articles consacrés aux institutions (à la
dokimasie à Délos, à deux liturgies l'hippotrophia et la boutrophia), à l'anthroponymie
(à Érétrie et à Athènes), aux pratiques religieuses (les groupes de thérapeutes, des
rites spécifiques de Thasos, de Thessalie, d'Arcadie). D'autres articles traitent des
femmes (dans la province de Maurétanie) et de questions historiques (les sources sur
l'histoire d'Alexandre, l'urbanisation de Chypre à l'époque hellénistique).
Après ces travaux de collègues et amis de Claude Vial, les éditeurs ont fait le choix
de republier quatre articles de l'honoranda qui offrent des synthèses relatives à des
points d'histoire du monde grec et que son auteur a bien voulu relire pour l'occasion.

In this volume, in honour of Claude Vial, former professor of Ancient Greek History
at the Université Paul Valéry-Montpellier III, are gathered 12 original contributions
by other scholars and 4 articles by Claude Vial herself, which are republished for this
occasion. Claude Vial, a historian with a fine knowledge both of inscriptions and of
Greek literature, is well known for her work on Delos and Greek society, particularly
on the history of women. It will therefore come as no surprise that these Mélanges
presented to her contain papers on institutions (dokimasia in Delos, and two types
of liturgy, hippotrophia and boutrophia), anthroponymy (in Eretria and Athens) and
religious practice (the groups of therapeutai, special rites of Thasos, Thessalia and
Arcadia). Other papers touch on women (in the province of Mauretania) and several
historical questions (the sources for the history of Alexander, the urbanisation of
Cyprus in the Hellenistic period).
After these studies by friends and colleagues of Claude Vial, the editors have chosen
to republish four articles by the honoranda, offering a synthesis on several points of
the history of the Greek world, which the author has revised for this occasion. The
volume includes a list of Claude Vial's publications.
