A syllable consists of one or more letters pronounced by a single impulse of the voice.
Letters that form a sound by themselves are called vowels; and those which can only be sounded with another letter, con sonants.
The union of two vowels pronounced by a single impulse of the voice, is called a diphthong.
The collection of the letters of which the words of a lan guage are formed, is called the Alphabet.
Words considered as signs of our thoughts, are distinguished into variable and invariable.
