Excerpt from Stowage of Ship Cargoes
In shipping nomenclature, the stowage factor of a commodity is the figure which represents the number of cubic feet of cargo space in which a long ton pounds) may be stowed. In shipping practice, rates are generally fixed upon the basis of weight in the case of a commodity a ton of which stows in less than 40 cubic feet, and upon the basis of space when a greater volume is required. The figure therefore, represents the assumed average stowage factor of all commodities.
