Excerpt from The Paths of Duty: Counsels to Young Men
These papers have been written in compliance with a request from the editor of The Young Man. The young have the long years of future before them; and all good men, who have themselves begun to enter into the Valley of the Shadow, cannot but look with the deep est interest on those who will be fighting the difficult battle of life, in that warfare which has no discharge, long after they themselves are sleeping with their fathers. I have given to young men, in the simplest and most straightforward manner, the advice which seemed to me most likely to be truly helpful to them. That advice is founded, throughout, upon a somewhat wide and varied experience of life. If, in giving it, I have frequently appealed to the words of others, it is because I wished to bring weightier evidence and tes timony than my own to bear upon the precepts which I offered; and if I often quote the words of the poets, it is because I have ever found them to be the deepest, as well as the most delightful, of moral teachers.
