With the time usually allotted to German in colleges and high-schools (two, possibly three, hours a week), a sufficient amount of grammar to commence the play may be obtained by the third quarter, and the student is then fairly launched upon the road of acquiring that which to the large majority of students in our higher schools is after all of prime importance reading at sight. This point gained will make the acquisition of speaking the language merely a question of practice. In preparing this school edition the editor has eu deavored to give a correct text, free from printer's mis takes and faulty punctuation, so confusing to the student and yet prevailing to an alarming extent in some older edi tions. To that end he has once more compared the text with the standard editions of Hempel and Cotta (kroner). That he has used the reformed spelling, o¿icially pro claimed in Prussia and generally followed in Germany.
